Zhengyuan Xia

Prof. Zhengyuan Xia is currently a full professor of Anesthesiology at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University, Guangdong, China, Adjunct Professor of Anesthesiology at Zhengzhou Central Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China, and a Principal Investigator at the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Department of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Following the completion of his undergraduate training as a MBBS from XianNing Medical College, China in year 1984, Prof. Xia received his clinical/residency training at Affiliated Hospital of Hubei Medical University (currently name: Medical School of Wuhan University) and worked initially in Department of Medicine. He then, started his postgraduate study in 1988 and received Master of Medicine degree in 1991, major in Anesthesiology. Thereafter, Prof., Xia worked as an anesthetist and be promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Anaesthesia in 1998 and to Academic Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in 1999. During his service at the Wuhan University Hospital, Prof. Xia was granted the opportunity to receive research training at Krannert Institute of Cardiology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, USA, in Professor Douglas P. Zipes’ research Lab in 1998, and further research training as a predoctoral student at Center for Experimental Surgery & Anaesthesiology, K.U. Leuven, Belgium, in Professor Willem Flameng’s Lab in 1999. Prof. Xia moved to Dept. of Anaesthesia, Stomatological College & Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, in 2000, and worked as Clinical Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Dept. of Anaesthesia. Prof. Xia started his PhD training in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada, in 2001 under the joint supervision of Professor David M. Ansley (Anesthesiologist) and Professor David V. Godin (Pharmacologist), studying the cardiac protective potential and mechanism of the intravenous anesthetic propofol against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, and received his PhD degree in 2004. He then continued his research training as a postdoctoral fellow in the field of diabetic cardiomyopathy in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC, Canada, under Professor John H. McNeill, followed by further postdoctoral fellow training in 2006 in the field of metabolic mechanism of diabetic heart in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Calgary, Canada, under Professor David L. Severson. Prof. Xia started his work as Research Assistant Professor in 2007 in the Department of Anesthesiology, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), China. At HKU, he was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2010, and Associate Professor in 2015. Prof. Xia has started to work as a full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University since January 2020.
